Uric acid is formed in the body by the breakdown of purine found in food. It is excreted from the body through urine. The liver breaks down purine to produce energy and uric acid are the end product. It then mixes it with blood to be sent to the kidneys. The kidneys are involved in this purine metabolism. Hyperuricemia occurs when there is a very high level of uric acid in the blood. This has many effects on the human body. When the required amount of uric acid is not ejected from the body, many bodily functions go astray. The chances of this happening are lesser in women than in men, although, after menopause, there are higher chances.
Hyperuricemia can be caused my kidney failure, hypertension, obesity, alcohol consumption, starvation etc. all these can affect the purine metabolism or functioning of the kidneys, which are responsible for the extraction of uric acid from the blood and then the passage of it dissolved in water. If this function of the kidneys is disrupted either by filter failure or reduced activity, uric acid is stored in the body. This does not always lead to gout.
Alcohol can be the cause for lactic acidosis and leading to increased production of uric acid. It also contributes to purine levels. Increase in purine levels can cause overproduction of uric acid. Thus, more of this will be in the blood and also there will not be enough water to dissolve it. Alcohol consumption can cause dehydration which will leave little water for the uric acid.
Fructose consumption in high quantity has been found to be a major contributor to hyperuricemia. Fructose will tend to pass through our system and will utilize more of the transport protein. It also gives rise to more of purine in the body. Fructose is found in high levels in artificially sweetened food and drinks. Starvation has a major effect on the body level of purine as well. Purine is an energy source and it is naturally produced by the body when it lacks sufficient energy to function. It also affects the kidneys function of excretion of uric acid.
Reducing the concentration of uric acid in the blood can help fight hyperuricemia because it buys more time for the existing uric acid to be passed out first. Lower temperature can contribute to the crystallization of the uric acid in the body, which is why gout attacks often occur at night. Keeping the body warm is one of the ways of lowering the risk of hyperuricemia in people who are prone to it.
There are some food that is rich in purine, even some green vegetables and leaves. There are others that can prevent it.
Turmeric which acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, artichoke which reduces the buildup of uric acid, garlic which reduces blood cholesterol levels, yucca plant which is known to fight arthritis, milk thistle which promotes the functioning of liver etc are some natural substances that help reduce the risk of hyperuricemia.
This disease has been found to occur with higher frequencies in the recent years due to changing dietary habits. It is best to make sure you are free of this risk.
