Gout or gout arthritis is a painful arthritic condition of the joints. It may affect any joint, heels, ankles, wrists, fingers, elbows etc but the most common is in the toes. This is caused by the accumulation of uric acid in the blood. Uric acid is a product of the breaking down of purines inside the body. These excess uric acids in the blood are accumulated in the joints and are crystallized. These crystals cause sudden intense pain, swelling, skin around them turning red or purple etc. Once attacked it may last for a week or two. Recurrent occurrence is also seen.
People who are prone to gout frequently are better to have a check on their medicines because many medications cause the uric acid production and that may lead to gout. Though not everyone with high uric acid gets gout but it’s better to take precaution.
Gout is also hereditary; anyone with a family history of having gout can expect the on slaught. They may take precautionary methods by avoiding purine rich food and take food and vegetables that can help reduce uric acid.
The best way to treat gout naturally is to avoid any food that can cause uric acid excess in the blood. The foremost aim is to avoid purine rich food. Uric acid is the product of purine breaking down. So avoiding purines is the prior way to avoid gout. Purine rich foods that are to be avoided are, Scallop, sea foods, turkey, red meat, liver, kidneys and sweetbreads, asparagus, cauliflower, spinach, mushrooms and any sweetened beverages. Avoid alcohol and especially beer.
Purine free eatables are milk, non-fermented milk products like cottage cheese, mozzarella & whey protein, and egg whites. Egg whites contain only protein and no purines and are better when eaten hard boiled and without the yolk. If one cannot avoid sea foods and meat they may eat Shrimp, lobster, eel and crab. Lamb chops and white meat are the better choices. Chicken and duck, leg meat is even better choice than chicken breast. The other types of foods that may help in protection against gout include complex carbohydrates, coffee, and fruits, especially citrus fruits.
Drink plenty of water to flush out uric acid. Water purifies the blood and the uric acid is dissolved and is passed as urine. Be sure to take 12 to 16 cups of fluid daily. It may not be only water but any non-sweetened juice, tea, and coffee will also do.
