What is Thyroid and how it affects a human body?
A thyroid is a butterfly-shaped organ and has two cone-like wings in the front of your neck. Though it looks small, its job compromises of immense responsibility in one’s body especially in teenage children. One of the main functions of the thyroid is to increase the metabolism rate and growth of a young body. To do that, it extracts iodine from the food and water you consume and stores in the thyroid. For creating hormones in your body, iodine is combined with an essential amino acid called as tyro-sine. Thus, thyroid hormones are secreted and expanded all through your body via blood streams promoting the body for healthier bone structure, attaining puberty level and other functions of the body. Thyroid hormones are one of the decision makers in making your body reach its functional level as you age.
Thyroid, its causes and symptoms
There are two types of causes – 1. Hyperthyroidism and 2. Hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism happens when the thyroid releases more hormones than is required for your body. It can also be called as “overactive thyroid”. A recent study shows that women are 10 times likely to undergo hyperthyroidism than men. Hyperthyroidism can further be differentiated into two parts such as Graves’ disease and Thyroiditis. Graves’ disease happens when the autoimmune system creates an object to make a large amount of thyroid hormones whereas thyroiditis occurs when a bacteria in the immune system causes the inflammation in the thyroid thus releasing hormones in the blood vessels. Overactive thyroid, if not treated properly can lead to miscarriage, multiple heartbeats, osteoporosis etc.
Hyperthyroidism symptoms may include –
- weight loss,
- shivering in their hands,
- excessive sweating,
- nervousness etc.
Some people even complain of lack of sleep, enlarged goiter or change in their bowel patterns.
On the contrary, Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid glands cannot function enough hormones for the body which leads to fatigue and droopiness. Hypothyroidism can lead to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis also known as autoimmune disease. Autoimmune disease happens when the resistance power attacks its own tissues including thyroid gland too. Several symptoms can be related to Hypothyroidism such as feeling lethargic, excessive sleep, rough and dry hair, constipation, etc. Certain people have also experienced increased in their cholesterol levels and even swelling in their legs.

Treatment and diagnosis for Thyroid
While treating both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, the doctor may take your physical tests such as trying to examine tremors in your hands and fingers, your reflexes etc. Also, a blood test might be conducted to check your thyroxine or TSH level. TSH is important as it signals the gland to produce more thyroxine for your body. For eg: If you are having the low level of thyroxine and high level of TSH, it means you are having an underactive thyroid.
For treating Thyroid, both conventional and alternative treatments are used such as surgery as well as balanced diets along with medications such as radioactive iodine treatment (which consists of consuming a pill) for hyperthyroidism causes damage in the thyroid gland thus reducing its effect for overproduction of thyroid hormones and can sometimes lead to hypothyroidism. Sometimes medications containing Acetaminophen (a content in Anacin or other painkillers) are also given to heal thyroid problems. These allopathy products contain harmful chemicals which can result in side-effects. For eg: Over-dose of acetaminophen can damage the liver. I am an aeronautical engineer by profession. Between my graduation and my first recruitment, I had a space to fill. The letters would come in months. In the meanwhile i did want to do something and my FIRST job was indeed as a content writer. A student of science trying her hands on art could be disastrous but it was a good one. I learned more than engineering and flying. Health, gadgets, food , travel and a whole lot of things came flooding to me in the form of words. Writing did happen and in a nice way.
